Window Treatments for Sliding Glass Doors

As the weather gets warmer, more and more homeowners are making use of their patios, decks, and porches. But as the days get sunnier, these spaces can create challenges in your home. Most of us enter and exit our patios via sliding glass doors, which let in a lot of light and don’t offer much in the way of privacy.

The right window treatments for sliding glass doors can solve these problems, with the added bonus of adding style to your home.

The Unique Challenges of a Sliding Glass Door

Many people think that vertical blinds are the only solution for covering sliding glass doors. However, we find that drapes add softness, particularly in a kitchen, where sliding glass doors are usually found. They also add height to areas like your basement. Drapes are a timeless choice that can easily be stacked when not in use.

The key to using drapes with your siding glass door is to mount the drapes far enough outside of the window trim so that the fabric will not get caught in the door when closing. In high traffic areas, it may also be wise to microseal your drapery fabric so that stains can easily be wiped away.

With drapes, you can choose a one-way draw, where drapes are pulled to one side when opened. There’s also a split stack, which opens in the middle. A split stack is easy to design, because of the built-in symmetry. However, most sliding doors do not offer enough room on either side to properly stack the drape. In these cases, we go with a one-way draw. Our designers create symmetry by building off of a wall of cabinets or other heavy structure in the room.

Trim at the Top

When adding drapery panels to a sliding glass window, you’ll want to consider how your drapes look both open and closed. We love these drapes with trim placed at the top for this exact reason. These drapes look lovely open or closed, and the patterned trim draws your eye upward.

White Linen

One of our most popular choices from the Design Simple collection is a white linen drapery panel. We’ve used it so many different ways, and each time the result is gorgeous. Sunlight looks gorgeous filtered through this exquisite fabric.

Seaming

Seaming is one of our favorite ways to create contrast, and it’s a look that is perfect for sliding glass doors. Seaming allows you to blend hard and soft, dark and light,  or pattern and solid. We love the Amarillo Way fabric from our Design Simple collection, and especially love how it looks when seamed in with a contrasting fabric. The horizontal stripes created by seaming also help to elongate your room.
