A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The Drapery Street Workroom

Drapery Street drapes and soft treatments are handmade in the Midwest — and most are handcrafted in our Indianapolis workroom by our all-female team of artisans.

The Drapery Street workroom was founded in 2021 out of necessity. Like many other companies, the pandemic was causing us to face supply chain issues and staffing shortages —all during a time when demand for our products and services was increasing. We knew we had to take production into our own hands in order to continue providing the exceptional service we are known for.

We started with a 200-square-foot workroom in the corner of our warehouse and quickly realized we needed much more space, additional machinery, and another seamstress. When the neighboring space became available we quickly snagged it— quadrupling our workroom space.

While we initially created our workroom out of necessity to control lead times, many more advantages quickly came to fruition. In addition to quicker turnaround times, we could now provide special specifications and timely reworks. Because our soft treatments are made locally, they are never boxed or packaged, which reduces the need for steaming during installation. Controlling production allows us to guarantee our quality is unmatched.

Our unique 9-point inspection ensures consistent, accurate, bespoke-level production unmatched by other workrooms. We double-check every detail, every stitch, every time.

Our 9-Point Inspection includes:

1. Double-check fabric yardage and cut lengths upon receiving work order
2. Inspection of fabric on a light box to ensure there are no snags or imperfections in the fabric
3. Pulled threads to ensure straight cuts with grain of fabric and not pattern placement
4. Proper slide/pleat/snap count to coordinate with custom hardware
5. Precision pattern-matching — every joined panel is ensured to have patterns matched up beautifully
6. Ability to use cotton thread to match fabric color
7. Holding fabric taut when sewing to avoid rippling or errors
8. Hang drapes for at least 24 hours to ensure accurate drape length
9. Finished product is labeled with client name, room location, and number of pleats to set installation up for success

Our workroom associates are the most creative and detail-oriented in the industry. The creation of our workroom wouldn’t have been possible without their hard work and dedication. Our Operations Associate & Head of Workroom, Nina, is a self-made seamstress who committed herself to becoming a drapery maker when we decided to take production internally. In addition to running our warehouse, scheduling our installers, and liaisoning with the trades, our Operations Manager Sarah began researching sewing techniques and implementing effective processes to ensure our workroom is world-class. When we expanded and added a seamstress, Loris was our top choice. With over 40 years of experience, her knowledge and skills are unrivaled.
